Massie obtained the bachelor of science qualification in electrical engineering as well as an MS master’s degree in mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Thomas was a part of the MIT Solar Car Club, which finished second over the Swiss group competing in the Solar and Electric 500 at the Phoenix International Raceway in 1991. The team broke several world records, such as a lap speed of over 60 miles per hour (99 km/h) and straight-away speeds exceeding 70mph (112 kilometers/h).

Massie also campaigned for then-U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul, speaking to various Tea Party groups on his behalf.
