Martinson’s career at the college level included playing the 1977-78 and 1978-1979 seasons with the St. Cloud State Huskies. In the years 1981-86 his team was for the International Hockey League and Central Hockey League for the Toledo Goaldiggers (IHL), Salt Lake Golden Eagles (IHL), Birmingham South Stars (CHL) as well as the Tulsa Oilers (CHL). While playing for the Tulsa Oilers in the 1983-84 season, the team halted operations on February 16th, 1984. They played only on the road for the remaining 6 weeks.
