Karas is a member of the European Parliament since the 1999 European elections. Since then, he has been serving as a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. He been an alternative to his position on the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection as well as as a part of the temporary committee on the policy challenges and budgetary measures of the expanded Union 2007-2013. In the last few months, he was a member of the Committee Special on Tax Rulings and other Measures similar in nature or Effect in 2015 as well as The Committee of Inquiry to investigate allegations of maladministration and violations when it comes to the application of Union laws relating to tax avoidance, and tax evasion in the year 2016.
