McQueary was a key witness in Penn State’s child sex abuse scandal.
He was divorced from Barbara, his wife, and was living separately in Virginia, with their daughter, aged 4. McQueary is related to John II, an older brother. John Sr., their father, a physician, described them as “unusually close” because they were close before and after the scandal.
In April 2017, McQueary was among several passersby who came to the aid of an elderly woman who was a victim of an automobile crash near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
McQueary was placed on indefinite administrative leave by Penn State after he announced that McQueary would no longer be the receivers coach for the last home game of the season. The Patriot-News reported later that McQueary had told his receivers that he was no longer their coach in a conference call.
