Michel’le is a South Central Los Angeles native who was previously a featured vocalist of Louisiana Creole descent singing “Turn Off the Lights” on World Class Wreckin’ cru’s 1987 single. She was then called to record vocals to Mona Lisa at the last moment. Michel’le signed to Eazy-E’s Ruthless Records. Her self-titled debut album was released in 1989. It was entirely produced by Dr. Dre, her then-boyfriend. The album featured “No More Lies”, which peaked at #7 in the Billboard Hot 100. It also included the hits singles “Nicety”, and “Something in My Heart.” Michele was certified Gold on April 25, 1990, with over 1.3 million copies sold to date. Jerry Heller was forced by the Suge Knight shakedown to sign over Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. and Michel’le. She was nominated for Best Rap Performance by a Group or Duo at the 33rd Grammy Awards.

Michel’le got engaged to Dr. Dre. They have a son Marcel (b. 1991). Dre was pregnant when they started dating in 1988. Marcel was Dre’s first child and Marcel was his fourth. Their relationship became more complicated after their son was born due to Dr. Dre’s infidelity, drinking and volatile behavior. Michel’le stated that Dre was physically abusive throughout their marriage. She suffered a broken nose, five black eyes, and a cracked rib. On The Breakfast Club, she recalled that Dre hit her once and they both cried in bed. He later apologized but continued to abuse her. Dre fired at Michel’le after a brief argument, but missed her by inches. He saw the bullet and she said that he had never tried to shoot her again. We thank God. The beatings were brutal. His last wife was the one who beat him. It’s just too much.” Then she began self-medicating with prescription pills and alcohol. Michel’le divorced Dre when she found out he was engaged.

Michel’le contributed to the soundtrack Dysfunktional in 2003. She has since confirmed through several media outlets that she’s been working on new material and looking for a label for her third album. In 2011 and 2014, Michel’le released new singles “Freedom To Love” and “It Still Hurts,” though she hasn’t released an album since 1998.
