Stoney was a Governor’s Fellow under Mark Warner’s administration in the summer 2004. Stoney worked for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign, as well as the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin as part of a get out of the vote effort. Five of Stoney’s co-workers were later charged with cutting the tires on a van that was intended to drive Republican voters to polls. Stoney initially claimed he didn’t know about the incident, but later lied to police. After his colleagues arrived to bristle about cutting the tires, Stoney later admitted to FBI investigators that they were present at the Democratic campaign offices. Stoney went on to testify against the others and cooperated fully with law enforcement. Stoney was then questioned by Virginia Republican legislators about his indiscretions. It was deemed “an isolated, juvenile mistake.”
Stoney was a Tabb High School quarterback and president of the student body. He also served as a middle and elementary school principal. Stoney graduated in 2004 from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia. Stoney was the first African American male to be elected president of the student body and was active in the College Democrats chapter at the school.
McAuliffe appointed Stoney as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia on November 18, 2013. Following confirmation by the Virginia General Assembly, he took office on January 17, 2014.
