Sandford was born in Lambeth but he moved into Basingstoke where he was a player with the team from Basingstoke Town. He was noticed by scouts at Portsmouth and was signed on as a professional in the month of December 1985. The coach was Alan Ball and once Ball was replaced by Bobby Campbell as manager he promoted Sandford to the first team. Sandford played 90 games for Pompey over the course of five seasons, but the new director John Gregory made it clear that he didn’t want Sandford to be a part of his first squad. Therefore, Sandford was offered a contract by Stoke City where Ball had left to join their team for PS140,000.
