A star basketball athlete in Villa Angela St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, Ohio, Calhoun was a student at Cleveland State University as a player for for two years in the under Rollie Massimino. Calhoun then transferred to Cincinnati and was an assistant to a student under Bob Huggins until his graduation in 2004.
Calhoun’s first position post-graduation was an assistant coach to Walsh University where he was part of the Cavaliers’ NAIA national championship team in 2005. In 2007 Calhoun was back with Huggins as a coach at West Virginia as director of basketball operations. He also was elevated to assistant coach one season.
