The family was born in St. Louis, Missouri, Colbert Busch is the eighth of eleven children born to father and mother James William Colbert Jr. He was one of the early vice presidents of academic affairs at the Medical University of South Carolina as well as Lorna (nee Tuck) Colbert who was a housewife.
