Ayre was raised on a farm near Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, and graduated high school from Salmon Arm, British Columbia. His parents were pig and grain farmers. He received a bachelor of science degree (BSc) from the University of Waterloo in 1984. In 1989, he also earned a MBA in management finance at City University of Seattle.
