After a long struggle for his services, Berlin chose to accept an athletic scholarship to study at an academic institution, the University of Florida, where he was a player for Steve Spurrier’s Florida Gators football team during the seasons of 2000 and 2001. His time as an Florida Gator never panned out however, since the team was stuck behind Rex Grossman on the team’s depth chart. If given the chance to begin with the Orange Bowl because Grossman was removed for violating curfew, Berlin performed adequately. He orchestrated two scoring drives from six opportunities in the first quarter with one touchdown passing as well as two interceptions. Grossman was brought in at the end of the first quarter and played an impressive game, establishing his place as the Gators quarterback to start the next season. Berlin played in 12 contests for the Gators during two seasons, throwing 849 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions, while completing 64-of-106 passes (60.4 percent).
